Vehicle Security Monitoring for Critical Infrastructures

From October 21-23, 2025, the FINESSE consortium presented current research at CRITIS 2025 (20th International Conference on Critical Information Infrastructures Security) at Jönköping University, Sweden.

Paper: “Towards a Holistic and Multi-Modal Vehicle Security Monitoring”

Ali Recai Yekta presented the paper during the “Vehicles” session. Authors: Ali Recai Yekta and Cenk Yekta (Yekta IT), Dominik Spychalski, Markus Heinrich, and Christoph Krauß (INCYDE), and Prof. Stefan Katzenbeisser (University of Passau). The paper was developed within the FINESSE research project.

Today’s vehicles are highly networked, complex systems requiring vehicle-specific security monitoring. Vehicle monitoring and building Vehicle Security Operations Centers (VSOC) fundamentally differ from traditional IT and OT SOCs due to: mobile, decentralized assets with changing connectivity; heterogeneous systems with diverse protocols; multi-modal data sources from in-vehicle sensors to backend systems; and specific requirements for automotive and rail sectors.

The paper examines how VSOCs can be designed for automotive and rail industries and how both domains can learn from each other. The approach connects data from vehicle fleets with background information available in the automotive environment and proposes a formalized data model linking monitored information to comprehensive security situational awareness.

CRITIS 2025 provided an important platform for international exchange on critical infrastructure security. Discussions clearly showed: Connected vehicle security is an integral part of protecting critical transport and mobility infrastructure.
