FINESSE at SECUREWARE 2025 in Barcelona

From October 26-30, 2025, the FINESSE consortium was prominently represented at SECURWARE 2025 (The Nineteenth International Conference on Emerging Security Information, Systems and Technologies) in Barcelona, presenting current research on automotive cybersecurity.
Paper: “From ECU to VSOC: UDS Security Monitoring Strategies”
The paper was developed in collaboration between Ali Recai Yekta (Yekta IT), Nicolas Loza, Jens Gramm, and Michael Peter Schneider (ETAS), and Prof. Stefan Katzenbeisser (University of Passau) as part of the FINESSE research project.
The research addresses security challenges of the Unified Diagnostic Services (UDS) protocol – a critical communication protocol for vehicle diagnostics. The presented security monitoring strategies utilize in-vehicle logging and remote analysis through a Vehicle Security Operations Center (VSOC) to identify UDS attack scenarios. The approach demonstrates that the detection methods cover a wide range of potential attack vectors, and it identifies gaps in current AUTOSAR-standardized security events.

Training: “Building Security Monitoring Solutions with Open-Source Tools”
Ali Recai Yekta offered intensive training on day one, providing practical insights into building security monitoring solutions. The training covered how attackers operate (Cyber Kill Chain, MITRE ATT&CK, VATT&EK Framework) and which open-source tools can be used to build a Security Operations Center. A key insight: simply installing tools doesn’t create a SOC – it creates merely a collection of tools. The crucial difference lies in systems thinking and intelligent integration.
Panel Discussion: Cybersecurity Resilience Challenges
Moderated by Prof. Dr. Alexander Lawall (IU International University of Applied Sciences), Ali Recai Yekta discussed current challenges in cyber resilience with international experts: Niklas Lindskog (Ericsson, Sweden), Prof. Dr. Aspen Olmsted (Wentworth Institute of Technology, USA), Prof. Dr. Yuichi Kaji (Nagoya University, Japan), and Timm Bostelmann (FH Wedel, Germany).
